Welcome
Diamond H Ranch raises White Dorper and Katahdin Sheep. Our passion is the quality of hair sheep we raise and the family involvement a sheep ranch provides. We believe both White Dorper and Katahdin Sheep complement each other very well in that both are a type of hair sheep. The fact that both breeds are hair sheep also means both are raised for meat production. Our main focus on our sheep is both structure and meat to bone ratio. To help with our quality check we also take our sheep to shows. This helps keep us in check on the quality of sheep we raise. To help us with the day to day chores Diamond H Ranch also has a stock dog. Our stock dog is an Australian Shepherd name “Sassy”. She is very helpful when sheep get loose or just needs to be moved from one paddock to another. If you get a chance come see us here in Emmett, Idaho, and you will like what you see.
Katahdin Sheep
Katahdin Sheep are in the hair sheep class. What that means is in the winter they grow a heavy coat like any other sheep, but in the spring they shed off their coat so you don’t have to shear them. Katahdin Sheep also produce a lot of milk for their lambs, and have a strong mothering instinct. What this helps with is the prevention of bummer lambs. Katahdin Sheep are also known for their endurance and hardiness. Most stock dog trainers like to use Katahdins because they are so hardy and quick to flight. At Diamond H Ranch we found Katahdin Sheep to be quick to flight, but also quick to trust people. This makes working with them a huge pleasure.
White Dorpers
White Dorpers are another type of hair sheep. We found at Diamond H Ranch that the bone structure of a White Dorper is different than a Katahdin Sheep, and there is more meat on a White Dorper than on Katahdin Sheep. We also see that White Dorpers are not as flighty as Katahdin Sheep. Another characteristic we like is how easy they are to work with. White Dorpers like Katahdin Sheep can also handle a great variety of climates. It doesn’t matter whether the White Dorpers are in the heat of the summer or the coolness of the winter. They thrive in any climate.
Stock Dog
Here at the Diamond H Ranch we have had the pleasure of working with many different breeds of stock dog. As seen in the picture the breed of stock dog we currently use is known as an Australian Shepherd. We found this particular Australian Shepherd to be a perfect fit for the sheep ranch. The reason behind that statement is she is willing to help us when we are there, and doesn’t bother the sheep when we are not there.
